Keeping your license plate when moving or buying a car – rules & savings

Thanks to nationwide license plate portability in Germany, you no longer need to have new plates embossed when moving to another city or buying an already registered used vehicle. Keeping the existing plate saves both the cost of new plates and a new emissions sticker.

Moving or buying a registered vehicle

If you move to another district or purchase a currently registered vehicle, you can keep the existing license plate during the online transfer:

  • No cost for new embossed license plates
  • No new green emissions sticker needed
  • Existing plate seals remain untouched on the vehicle

When is keeping the plate not possible?

Cross-district plate portability applies only to currently registered vehicles. If the vehicle was deregistered prior to the transfer in a new district, a new local prefix is assigned.

  2. 2Submit ZB I & ZB II codes. Enter the security codes from Part I and Part II along with your eVB number.
